--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I have both,
I'm in the process of building/planning an update for the 500, hopefully before quadzillathon 07'
I have a non running stock 500 with a pt pipe, open air box, owned it for 17yrs. Top speed the 500 is much faster.
IN the dunes the 500 is lower, more stable, heavier- power is very good.
The LTR is slower on the top end (tops at arround 75, with basic pipe/ power commander/open intake) the 500 would definetly beat it on a high speed fire road.
The LTR accelerates hard though- every bit as hard as the 500- just will not pull as long, have to shift, power flattens out much quicker
Suspension wise there is little comparision, the LTR blows away the 500 ( I have revlaved shocks , and a stabilizer on the LTR) THe 500 has good supension for the most part(dunes) but on the trail the LTR takes hits that would break the 500.
Jumps - no comparison. LTR
cornering- the LTR can be turned so quickly on a berm it's not even funny, however the 500 will actually slide and flatrack better-
Trail/moto cross = LTR
Flat/ high speed cornering = LT500
Dunes- toss up , The LTR is great in the dunes, and can climb anything, eats up the sand high way, good for long rides
LT500 - Still overall probably the most awesome dune bike of all time - only drawback is weight and suspension in the whoops- get it out of rythym and get rocked - stability is the best out of any production bike.
We'll see how it is once I get my suspension set up/ modded correctly, this could even the playing field.
Cost - initial cost for the LTR, and getting it trail ready sucks - you could just get a cherry bomb(computer map device) and paddles and be done, but it needs alittle (alot) more to be truly off-road ready.
LT500 get it to run and be done - or- restore and drain your wallet as well
If you ride dunes 100%, and have all the fixes done, there is no reason to sell your 500.
If you ride different types of terrain, want the latest technology, and understand fuel injection the LTR is the best bike for the moment.
TO be honest, the manufacturers disappointed me, the 17 yr difference between my 89'500 and 06' LTR is not as great as technological advancement as I would have liked in a real world performance kinda way, is the LTR 450 "better" - yes it is in almost every way, is it $6-8,000 better - no - unless you like being current with todays engineering.
LTR- Being able to run HIDs, on 91 octane, use electric start, and have bitchin' suspension is not hard to get used to - and I'm 'old school' never complaind about the 500 kicking back on those hard starts.
BTW-Fully built/ properly tuned the 500 will destroy the LTR in a drag race
all 450's power levels are good/ adequate, 700's don't make much more HP than the 450s - LT500's power is satisfying
$.02
