POLICE have named a woman feared killed after she was swept away as she crossed a swollen burn on a quad bike.
The horrific accident happened yesterday as gales battered Scotland.
Police and rescue workers were called to the scene in farm fields after 58-year-old Linda Weir fell off the quad bike into the fast moving waters.
A police spokesman said: "It appears she may have gone into Burnsands Burn as she crossed it on a quad bike on farmlands of Crairieknowe Farm.
"At the time the water was high and fast flowing and she may have been swept away.
"The quad bike was later recovered however rescue workers have yet to find Mrs Weir."
Mountain rescue teams and lifeboat services had joined police and ambulance crews at the scene near Thornhill in Dumfriesshire after the alarm was raised from a nearby farmhouse.
Throughout yesterday afternoon rescue workers searched for the missing woman.
The quad bike wreckage was found and recovered shortly afterwards.
At around 5pm rescue workers believed they had found a body in the burn.
But a short while later police confirmed it had been a false alarm.
The scene of the accident is about halfway between the town of Sanquhar and the village of Carronbridge, just off the A76 which runs alongside the River Nith.
The burn is surrounded by fields and is deep in the heart of a farming area.
One local, from near the scene, said last night: "This is a tiny community with very few houses and everyone knows everyone else.
"The police who worked on this are likely to know the family of this woman so this will be very close to home for everyone involved."
The accident happened as gales and heavy rain swept across the region.
A forecaster for the Met Office said Dumfries and Galloway had been the wettest place in Scotland.
They added: "There has been rain just about everywhere.
"There was fairly heavy rain in the morning and it's been a fairly damp afternoon.
"The wettest place has been Dumfries and Galloway where about 38mm of rain fell."
